About Handbridge

The district of Handbridge is located fairly centrally in Chester, adjacent to both the Queen’s Park and Curzon Park estates, and is home to the Chester Campus of South Cheshire College, the former further education establishment that merged with West Cheshire College in 2017 to form Cheshire College – South & West.

The area around Handbridge has been occupied since the Iron Age period, with the first formal buildings being set in place at the end of the 1st century AD when the site was used by the Roman Army as a sandstone quarry dedicated to the goddess Minerva, with a small shrine still visible in Edgar’s Field Park.

On the banks of the River Dee in Handbridge, close to the Grosvenor Bridge, is a small fishing cottage named ‘Nowhere’. Neither proved nor disproved, local legend attributes the Beatles’ song ‘Nowhere Man’ to a 1963 gig in the city, with John Lennon inspired by the building’s minimalist name.

Handbridge is on the same bend of the River Dee as Chester Meadows. Making up a feature known as the ‘Earl’s Eye’, Chester Meadows is an area of unspoilt water meadows that is home to an abundance of wildlife and is also popular with dog walkers. Due to control of the river’s flow, the Meadows are now a lot less boggy than when they were sketched by the 17th-century artist Francis Place.
