About Haslington
Located out to the east of the town of Crewe, the village of Haslington, the centre of the civil parish of the same name, used to be bisected by the A534 road linking Crewe with Sandbach. However, this road was re-routed to a nearby by-pass as the traffic volume became unsustainable for the smaller roads.
In the English Civil War, there was a short battle skirmish between the Royalist and the Parliamentarian forces that took place south of Haslington at a place referred to locally as Slaughter Hill. Legend has it that the brook nearby turned red from the volume of blood spilt. Although Slaughter Hill suggests it was named after this skirmish, it could also be a modernisation of “Sloe Tree Hill”. There are many sloes still growing in the local hedgerows to this day.
The Hawk Inn on the main road was built in the 17th century and is now Grade II listed. The pub still features original woodwork inside and out, including carved faces and engraved phrases on the exterior beams. It is claimed that famous highwayman Dick Turpin once stayed at the Hawk on his way through Cheshire.
