About Vicars Cross
Based around the centrally placed A51 Vicars Cross Road, the large residential Chester suburb of Vicars Cross was once based at an intersection of the Roman roads of Watling Street and the Via Devana. For most of the city’s history, the Vicars Cross area was largely agricultural, forming the basis of farmland worked by residents of the city.
Situated between Vicars Cross and the nearby village of Stamford Bridge is the local golf club. The Vicars Cross Golf Club was founded in 1939 when the closure of another club at Blacon Point led to one of the members buying 91 acres of farmland with the intention of creating a new course. Based on undulating parkland with historic features such as the old stone bridge, Vicars Cross famously has short greens, making it one of the trickier courses in the wider Chester area.
There are two decent-sized parks in Vicars Cross, Thackeray Forest and Queens Road. The Shropshire Union Canal Main Line also runs to the south of the suburb and is one of the last navigable canal waterways in the UK, running from Manchester and Ellesmere through to Shrewsbury and parts of North Wales.
