About High Green
High Green is arguably the most northern suburb of Sheffield. However, it is located around 8 miles from the city centre and is separated by a large area of green space and farmland, giving the area an independent feel.
The area is well connected via the M1 just to the east, along with the A616 and A61 roads to the north and west, respectively. Rail travel is possible from neighbouring Chapeltown, around a mile and a half from the centre of the High Green area.
The rock band Arctic Monkeys originate from High Green. Often associated with just Sheffield, frontman Alex Turner has often referred to High Green during opening statements at concerts and has also referenced the area in the lyrics to two different songs in their repertoire.
High Green briefly appeared in the news in 2013, gaining negative attention for the murder of the local church organist, Alan Greaves. St Saviour’s Church, the local Anglican parish church, is just around the corner from its Catholic counterpart of St Mary’s Church. Both are located on Mortomley Lane.
