About Hoyland
Located roughly halfway between the Yorkshire towns of Barnsley and Rotherham, Hoyland’s town is just off junction 36 of the M1 Motorway and was developed from three adjacent hamlets. Most of the town started to be built from the 1830s onwards, with Lowe Stand as one of the older landmarks in the area. The 18th-century folly was built for the 1st Marquess of Rockingham and was likely intended as a hunting lodge but was never completed.
Hoyland has a bustling town centre, with the High Street as its hub, home to stores such as B&M, an indoor market, several local independent food stores and several places to eat, regardless of what food you may enjoy. The high street is just a short walk from the Elsecar railway station, named after the neighbouring village that originally opened in 1897.
Arguably the most famous person from Hoyland is the author Barry Hines, best known for his novel, A Kestrel for a Knave, adapted into the 1969 film Kes and a regular part of many GSCE English Literature syllabuses.
