About Mapplewell
Being concurrent with neighbouring Staincross makes it difficult to describe whether a road or building is in either settlement. Many residents refer to boundary lines between the two settlements as being in different places, further blurring the lines between the two villages. Facilities such as the Primary School, Co-Op Food Store and various pubs (such as The Wentworth Arms) are all shared by locals from both villages.
As well as a strong nail-making industry, once the North Gawber Colliery was opened in 1854, coal mining became one of the main employers in the area until the site was closed in 1985. A football club started by local miners continues to this day, with players being the children or grandchildren of those employed at the colliery.
In 1761, John Wesley preached in Mapplewell when villagers had to worship in the neighbouring village of Darton. After Wesley’s visit, many small chapels were built in Mapplewell, of which only a few remain, having been converted into homes throughout the years. Although the building is much newer, Wesley would be proud that a Methodist Church still exists in the area to this day, although it is named in honour of the linked village of Staincross.
