About Monk Bretton
Formerly known as simply Bretton, the village has existed since the 11th century when it was recorded as a small farmstead owned by some Brits (native Saxons); Monk Bretton gained its full name later due to the presence of actual monks. Monk Bretton Priory was founded in 1154 as the Priory of St. Mary Magdelene of Lund – Lundwood is now the name of the neighbouring village.
Despite having a thriving priory for over 400 years, once King Henry VIII dissolved it, Monk Bretton didn’t gain its church until the 19th century, when St Paul the Apostle was built just off of Burton Road as the main place of worship for residents.
Located on the other side of the River Dearne from the nearby town of Barnsley, Monk Bretton is firmly in the Dearne Valley and maintains its small village feel, although the area is now more urbanised than ever.
Opening in 1870, the village was home to a thriving colliery that extracted coal from the Barnsley Seam and operated until dwindling supplies led to its closure in 1968. Despite being productive, the site was rarely safe, with over 80 men losing their lives at the colliery during its lifetime.
