About Rossington
One of the areas surrounding the main town of Doncaster, Rossington is a collection of smaller villages and hamlets that has a strong affinity with Yorkshire’s mining past. One of the last coal mines in the Doncaster area to remain open producing coal, Rossington Main Colliery finally closed in 2007, having operated for nearly 100 years, and leading to significant housing development nearby for miners and their families.
Rossington Hall is now a popular wedding venue in the area, having opened in 2012, following a few fallow years after a special school on the grounds was closed in 2008. The hall itself has an extensive and interesting history, built at the end of the 18th century, though destroyed by fire around a 100 years later. Despite the ability to stay overnight in luxury accommodation, Rossington Hall is apparently home to the ghost of Annette Streatfield, the former owner whose ethereal presence is said to inhabit the attic.
Just north of Rossington is the River Torne, a largely engineered waterway that was constructed to help reduce waterlogging in local farmland in parts of South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. It runs to a pumping station at Keadby, just west of Scunthorpe, where it feeds into the naturally flowing River Trent. To the east of Rossington is Doncaster Sheffield Airport, with Rossington Welfare Recreation Ground providing the main green space for local people.
