About Sprotbrough
Sprotbrough is located on the banks of the River Don to the west of Doncaster town, with the A1(M) motorway running past – the route based on the former highway known as the Great North Road. Joined to the neighbouring town by the Melton Road, the village is home to around 3,500 people in an incredibly scenic part of the UK countryside.
As the River Don is a navigable waterway, also used as a canal, the Sprotbrough Lock on the village’s south side provides a classic look back at the travel of the yesteryear, when canals throughout the North of England would regularly transport coal throughout the country.
Second World War flying ace Douglas Bader, known for his heroic skills in a cockpit, despite having lost both legs in an earlier plane crash, grew up in the Rectory in Sprotbrough after his mother married the parish vicar. Despite his stepfather’s mild-mannered approach, Bader had a somewhat unruly childhood in the village before being sent to boarding school following an incident with a neighbour and an air rifle!
There is a small nature reserve just south of the village known locally as the Flash due to its main feature of a long water-filled depression parallel to the river. Bones of woolly mammoth have been found on the site.
