About Staincross
Located close to junction 38 of the M1 Motorway and situated to the northwest of Barnsley, the village of Staincross is around 120 metres above sea level and is thought to originate as a settlement since at least Saxon times. A stone cross was present until the 18th century and was mentioned in several contemporary sources.
Dickie Bird, the Barnsley native and famed cricket umpire, has lived for most of his retirement in Staincross and, in 2003, helped support a local campaign for Royal Mail to officially recognise the village. Until then, residents had to refer to the location as Mapplewell, the neighbouring settlement.
Being concurrent with Mapplewell often makes it difficult to describe whether something is “in Staincross”. As many residents themselves refer to different invisible boundary lines between the two settlements. Facilities such as the Primary School, Co-Op Food Store and various pubs (such as The Wentworth Arms) are all shared by locals from both villages.
The Barnsley Golf Club is based just off Wakefield Road. Otherwise known as The Limes, the 18-hole course covers over 6,000 yards of the playable route. The rolling green is set among the beautiful Yorkshire landscape and is bordered by several beautiful trees, with a petrol station and convenience store just opposite.
