About Wombwell
Located out to the southeast of Barnsley on the banks of the River Dove, the town of Wombwell is a part of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and has been in existence for many years, with a name that roughly means a “well in a hollow”, due to the prevalence of water in the area.
Wombwell railway station, formerly known as Wombwell West due to another station in the town, was opened in 1897 and provides regular services into Leeds, Sheffield and Huddersfield, located on both the Hallam and Penistone lines.
The town’s main secondary education place is Netherwood Academy, just off Dove Valley Way, which was formed in 2012 due to a merger between Wombwell High School and the Darfield Foulstone School of Creative Arts. Teacher Mark Ibbertson made national headlines in 2019 when he and his teenage son helped rescue stranded people due to flooding with their inflatable dinghy.
Former England cricketer Roy Kilner, one of the shining lights of the sport in the first quarter of the 20th century, was born in Wombwell as one of 11 children before growing and developing an international career. After contracting a fever in India, Kilner returned to his Wombwell home. His subsequent funeral united the town people and thousands of cricket fans from across the country.
