About Bere Regis

Occupied as a settlement since at least the Iron Age, with evidence of a hill-fort less than half a mile from the village centre, Bere Regis is named in reference to the Old English word for wood, as well as its former status as royal land. King John, the monarch, made infamous through his association with Robin Hood myths, reportedly stayed in the area many times.

Although having an extensive past, the architecture of Bere Regis has suffered due to numerous fires throughout its history, most notably in 1777. The neighbouring hamlet of Shitterton was protected mainly at the time due to the small stream that runs through the village, meaning that the original thatched cottages survive to this day.

As a central part of Thomas Hardy’s fictional county of Wessex, Bere Regis (renamed Kingsbere) is the central setting for his 1891 novel “Tess of the d’Urbervilles”. The family name was also derived from the Turberville family, a local group of landowners.

Facilities in Bere Regis include two pubs (The Drax Arms and The Royal Oak), paintballing, campsite, chapel, petrol station and play area just off of Elder Road. Bere Regis Primary and Pre-School caters for junior-level education for children in the village and replaced the former Bere Regis School in December 2018.

Whether you live in Bere Regis itself or in other local areas like Winterborne Kingston, Bovington, Sandford, Crossways or Lytchett Matravers, there will be a shutter to suit your home and style. Get in touch with our team and book your free home appointment today.
