About Blandford Forum

Nestled around a bend of the River Stour, Blandford Forum has been used as a point to cross the river since at least the Anglo-Saxon period, when it was referred to as Blaneford in the Domesday Book.

Becoming a thriving market town in the intervening years, Blandford was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1731, meaning that there are little to no buildings from before this time. Eye catching features such as the town hall were built in the aftermath of the fire, with Blandford retaining its regular cattle market.

Local architects John and William Bastard were the main driving force behind the town’s rebuilding and were behind the use of the baroque style that had fallen out of fashion in the capital by then. The Town Hall, St Peter and St Paul Church, House and town layout were their work, and the brothers went on to plan and build a number of other luxurious properties throughout Dorset in the following years.

Blandford is nowadays more closely associated with the Royal Corps of Signals, the communication arm of the British Army, which has its HQ at Blandford Camp, just northeast of the town. There is a museum celebrating army communications based on the army base, which opened in 1997, and shows an array of different machines and devices used through the years.
