About Busby

Found to the south of the city of Glasgow and nestled on the banks of White Cart Water, the village of Busby has existed since the 14th century and historically was known as Bushby. Most of the original settlement was removed at the end of the 18th century when the area was reshaped and remodelled due to the arrival of cotton milling.

Due to the success of the two cotton mills in Busby, other industries such as Lint milling, cloth bleaching and Printworks all came to the area as well, leading to an influx of people. The growing success of the Printworks by the 1860s meant that a railway line was developed through the village to deal with the volumes of distribution required.

One of the most significant people to come from Busby was Thomas Donohoe, the son of Irish immigrants who is attributed with bringing football to Brazil. Working for the local printworks, Donohoe emigrated to Bangu, just outside of Rio de Janeiro while working for the Platt Brothers printers. He helped form the first integrated football club (Bangu Athletic), featuring the country’s first black footballer in 1905, an incredible feat when you consider racial prejudices around the world at the time.
