About Partick
Served by the Partick Railway Station and the A814 riverside road, the Glasgow area of Partick is one most closely associated with the Highlands, and the maintenance of the Gaelic language, particularly due to the presence of the Gaelic Books Council. The Category B listed Partick Burgh Hall was built in 1872 and is now used as a community hub following a long period of use as a council building.
In 1875, the Partick Riots lasted for three days on the centenary of Daniel O’Connell’s birth, highlighting tensions between native Glaswegians and Irish immigrants. Rachel Molly Hamilton, a shipyard worker affectionately known as Big Rachel, was called in as an Irish-born special constable to help dissipate the violence, gaining an almost legendary status in the area.
Four former footballers all originated from Partick, including Newcastle United legend Jimmy Lawrence, Tosh McKinlay, Pat McGinlay and Garry McDowall, who emigrated to Australia and played a number of times for their national soccer team. Helen Holm, one of the pioneers of ladies’ golfing, was also raised in Partick, and now has an amateur trophy named in her honour, as part of the Scottish Women’s Open Championship.
