About Shawlands

One of the main areas on the southern side of Glasgow, Shawlands is situated on White Cart Water, the stream that forms part of the River Cart, a tributary of the River Clyde. Often referred to as the ‘Heart of the Southside’, Shawlands is known for its independent restaurants and cafes, parks, terraces and iconic sandstone tenements.

In 2022, Shawlands was included in the Sunday Times Best Places to Live list, placing at number 5, with judges referring to the area as “both practical and cool”. Close in proximity to Pollok Country Park and the iconic Burrell Collection, Shawlands has increasingly become a desirable place to live in a beautiful city that unfortunately still has a negative reputation throughout much of the UK.

Within walking distance of Shawlands is Queens Park, the Victorian era open space acquired by the city in 1857 and designed by Sir Joseph Paxton. The world-renowned gardener, architect and MP for Country for over 10 years was also responsible for noted public parks in London such as the architectural masterpiece of the Crystal Palace for the 1851 Great Exhibition.

The Shawlands Railway Station is located on the Cathcart Circle Line and originally opened in 1894. Being part of a circular route around the city, most trains end up in Glasgow Central, a journey of around 10 minutes. Other routes go out to the village of Newton out to the east of Glasgow. It is not to be confused with Newton Mearns, a neighbouring town that does not have its own railway access.
