About Thornliebank

The suburban area of Thornliebank, located to the south of Glasgow is built on the route of the Auldhouse Burn, a stream that eventually leads to the River Clyde. Nestled between the other residential areas of Giffnock and Darnley, Thornliebank was originally just a village founded in the 18th century, developing around a local printworks that opened in 1778.

Thornliebank’s first official appearance was in 1795 on a map by famed Scottish cartographer Thomas Richardson. At that point the area was referred to as “Thorny Bank”, a title thought to have been inspired by the number of thorns growing in the area at the time.

Former residents of Thornliebank have had an impact locally and across the globe. While it was the Crum family’s printworks that were major employers in the area for many years, it was other sons of the region, Jim McCormick, a major league baseball player in America, and David Hanna, an executive for the Canadian National Railways, that had a wider impact than their humble origins may have indicated.

Thornliebank Railway Station was first opened by the Busby Railway in 1881 and now operates on the Glasgow South Western Line, offering regular services to Glasgow Central and East Kilbride to the south east of the city.
