About Acomb

Bordered by the A1237, the historic village of Acomb is now included as a suburb of the City of York, and in the 2011 census was reported as being the largest residential area of the city. Although it used to be a small farming village, the growth of the rail industry in the 19th century led to something of a population explosion in the area.

The name of the area is thought to have originated in Old English. The word ‘acum’ roughly translates to “at the oak trees”, indicating the key geographical features when the village was first founded. Throughout its history, Acomb has gone through various owners, with a manor built during the time of Edward the Confessor, medieval hospitals, wool merchants and rail works.

The principal parish church of St Stephen’s is a 19th century Grade II listed building based on the site of a previous medieval structure. Suffering an arson attack in the early 1990s, St Stephen’s was repaired with contributions from the local community.

Some of the notable people to have an association with Acomb are the painter Thomas Stothard, who spent part of his childhood in the village, similar to award-winning novelist Justin Hill, and the romantic poet Charlotte Richardson, who lived most of her life in the area.
