About Bishopthorpe

Just south of the City of York, on the banks of the River Ouse, Bishopthorpe is a village that is included in the local Unitary Authority, while retaining its distinct personality. Formerly known as Thorpe St Andrew, dedicated to the saint (and brother of Simon Peter), the village was renamed in reference to the presence of bishops in a large property on the banks of the river. Many of the local street names also reference previous bishops.

Home to the Archbishop of York, second highest clergyman in the Church of England, Bishopthorpe Palace has its origins in a medieval country house provided by Walter de Gray, an Archbishop and also Lord Chancellor under the infamous King John. The property was extensively remodelled by Thomas Atkinson in the 1700s, and renovated at the start of John Sentamu’s tenure as Archbishop.

Many local facilities are available for residents, including pharmacies, schools, pubs, playgrounds, marina, tennis clubs and there is even a small high street, although relatively few shops now remain in the village. A small Co-Op is still on Main Street, though for the vast majority of food shopping, residents need to travel slightly further afield, with a Tesco Extra just the other side of the A64.
