About Huntington
Situated just to the east of the River Foss, the York suburb and former village of Huntington has been settled since at least the Norman era, when the parish church of All Saints was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Huntington remained a tiny agricultural village until the late Victorian era, when the development of New Earswick and Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Strensall led to something of a population explosion.
Huntington was once home to the Huntington Stadium, a former home to York City Knights English Rugby League team (formerly York Wasps). As the older facility became more and more outdated, a new sports stadium was mooted for the city. In 2014, Huntington closed its doors, and was followed up by a community archaeological project that unveiled the site of a Roman Marching Camp site. After years of legal problems, the new York Community Stadium opened in 2021, and is also shared with York City Football Club.
Right by the York Community Stadium are a wide variety of facilities, including a cinema, Hollywood Bowl, Motorsports village and retail park (Monks Cross). There are also a number of supermarkets, such as Aldi, Asda and Sainsbury’s, making Huntington a key part of the wider York economy.
