About Knaresborough
Named in the Domesday Book as Chenaresburg, Knaresborough developed as a town after the castle was built in 1100. Located on the banks of the River Nidd, the town is close to the A1(M), as well as being situated on the main railway line between York and Harrogate.
As well as the remains of the castle, there are a number of historical landmarks in Knaresborough, such as St Robert’s Cave, and the home of Mother Shipton. The well near to Mother Shipton’s Cave is said to be the oldest tourist attraction in England to charge a fee, as visitors began to be charged for entry from as early as 1630.
The railway viaduct is a striking part of the town’s skyline, and Knaresborough also boasts a particularly interesting Courthouse Museum, with original Tudor interior, located in the grounds of the castle.The first chemist in England, which opened in 1720, was also based in the town, although it is now home to an independent tea room.
Knaresborough is something of a commuter town, due to its transport links, however there is a growing tourism industry, as well as service sector. A regular market continues to take place in the centre of the town, which has taken place since the 13th century.
