About Bingley
Listed as “Bingheleia” in the 1086 Domesday Book, Bingley is a market town on the banks of the River Aire that is also intersected by the A650 between Bradford and Keighley.
Like many towns in Yorkshire, Bingley was incredibly successful during the Industrial Revolution, particularly in terms of textiles. A section of canal was completed in 1774, linking Bingley to Skipton and Bradford, helping promote trade for the wool and yarn that was manufactured in the town.
Bradford City Council organises an annual music festival, Bingley Music Live in Myrtle Park. The park also hosts the Bingley Show every year, claiming to be one of the largest one day agricultural shows in Europe.
One of Bingley’s more notorious sons is the infamous serial killer Peter Sutcliffe, who was born in the town in 1947. The town also donated its name to the former Bradford & Bingley bank, formed from a 1964 merger between Bradford Equitable Building Society and the Bingley Permanent Building Society.
