About Hawkhurst

Sometimes referred to locally as the Crossroads of the Weald, the village of Hawkhurst is thought to be named from the Old English term for a wooded hill that was frequented by hawks. Hurst (or Hyrst) as a name refers to either a wood, or a wooded area, and there are a number of placenames in both Kent and Sussex that have the word as part of its name.

Located at a junction of the Cranbrook Road and the A268, Hawkhurst is a village with over 1,000 years of history, with Saxon remains, iron industry and hop growing all playing a part in its story. One of the most notorious gangs of smugglers from the 18th century, the Hawkhurst Gang, terrorised the surrounding area in the 1740s. After the Battle of Goudhurst in 1747, the gang’s reign of terror was brought to an end, and their leader Thomas Kingsmill was executed.

The iconic 14th century moated castle of Bodiam is just a short drive from Hawkhurst and nearby Robertsbridge. Built by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge in 1385, the castle is not thought to have had any role in war until the time of the English Civil War. Even then it was minimal. Due to then owner Lord Thanet’s support of the king, Bodiam Castle was sold to pay fines and subsequently dismantled, being left as a picturesque ruin for nearly 200 years when it was bought by politician and racist philanthropist John Fuller in 1829.

Whether you live in Hawkhurst itself or in surrounding areas such as Wittersham, Kilndown, Sedlescombe or Brightling, there will be a shutter to suit your home and style. Get in touch with us at Shuttercraft and book your free home appointment today.
