About Rye

Right in the heart of 1066 Country, the area of the South East famous for the Norman Invasion, the town of Rye is located on the banks of the River Rother, just a short distance inland from the estuary around Camber Sands. As with many places along the Sussex and Kent coastline, Rye was a strategically important port and harbour, which was fortified from the 14th century with just one of the original entrances to the town still standing (Landgate).

Rye provides a good local focus point for both the Romney Marsh and Walland Marsh areas, offering a site of commerce as well as proving popular with tourists. The regular Farmers’ Market happens weekly, having originally received a market charter from King Edward at the end of the 13th century. The town has a reputation for smaller independent shops offering antiques, collectors’ books, and records, as well as several art galleries promoting the work of local artists.

In the centre of Rye is Lamb House. Now owned and run by the National Trust as a tourist attraction, the red-brick fronted Georgian town house was once closely associated with novelists Henry James (at the turn of the 20th century), and later E. F. Benson who based his fictional location of Tilling on Rye.

Whether you live in Rye itself or in surrounding places such as Hastings, Lydd, Camber and Hythe, there will be a shutter to suit your home and style. Get in touch with us at Shuttercraft and book your free home appointment today.
