About Tilehurst
With its own history stretching back as far as the 13th century, Tilehurst is now seen as a suburb of the much wider Reading area, with its origins placed around the land owned by Reading Abbey, whose protection the village enjoyed until the Dissolution of the Monasteries of the 1540s under Henry VIII.
Although it doesn’t have its own hospital, reducing the number of people originally coming from Tilehurst, the village has still been home to a number of notable people over the years, including actor/director Kenneth Branagh, musicians Mike Oldfield and Bryan Adams, as well as famed Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna for a brief period in the 1980s.
One of the dominating features of the Tilehurst skyline is the Tilehurst Water Tower, sometimes referred to as the Park Lane Water Tower based on its location, a stunning 1930s structure who architecture evokes an opulence not reflected in the practical nature of its construction. Notably visible from the M4 when heading towards Reading from the west, the water tower was designed to help pump water to properties higher than an earlier water tower in the area.
