About Broughton Astley

Situated to the south west of Leicester, and not far from the M1 motorway, Broughton Astley is a large village that is comprised of two smaller settlements, Primethorpe and Broughton, that are still segmented by the Broughton Road.

From the Domesday Book of 1086, the area showed that it had under 200 residents, and by a local census of 1800 this had only doubled to around 450. Largely agricultural, Broughton Astley developed from around 1800 onwards with the growth of knitting/hosiery industries as well as brickmaking, tailoring and shoemaking in the area.

Former professional snooker player Willie Thorne lived in Broughton Astley for many years, and ran a snooker club in nearby Leicester from 1982 onwards. A man plagued by many troubles over the years, Thorne and his wife, former Miss Great Britain Jill Saxby, lived in a detached mock Tudor home on the edge of the village.

Around 4 miles from the centre of the village is Fosse Meadows Country Park, a relatively new planted woodland that features kid’s play equipment, bird hide, ponds, orienteering course and bridleway. Operated by the Blaby District Council, the Country Park leads to a number of local footpaths, picnic area and lake, all located adjacent to the route of the Fosse Way Roman road.
