Located to the west of Grantham, just where the A52 intersects the A1, the village of Barrowby first appears on record in the 1086 Domesday Book, when it is referred to as “Bergebi”. Like some of the other Viking-influenced names in the area, it is thought to derive from ‘berg-by’, meaning village on the hill.
Located next to the village primary school (affiliated with the C of E) is the parish church dedicated to All Saints. Built on the site of a medieval church, the 13th-century building was extensively looted during the suppression of the monasteries in the mid-16th. There were many developments during the Victorian era to restore the former glories of the building and including a pipe organ.
One of the most famous people to originate from Barrowby is Dr Thomas Hurst, the 17th-century vicar who became the personal chaplain to King Charles I during the English Civil War. After the war, he was not judged for his support of the king and retook his position as local rector for the area. He helped set up the local almshouses as well as carried out a number of other activities for the poor that made the people of Grantham incredibly grateful, granting him the freedom of the borough.
