About Manthorpe
The village of Manthorpe is in the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire. It can be found just outside the northern side of Grantham and can be accessed via the A607 road that runs all the way between Lincoln and Leicester. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the town was to the village when a housing estate was built in the area, effectively removing the divide between the two settlements.
Based around the banks of the River Witham, Manthorpe used to be named Little Gonerby-cum-Manthorpe due to its proximity to the other Gonerby villages in the Grantham area. Most of the land in the area was maintained for agricultural purposes, and owned by the Brownlow family, owners of nearby Belton House.
The parish church, named in honour of St John the Evangelist, was designed by the Nottingham architect George Gordon Place and built-in 1847–48. Initially, St John’s was built just for the spiritual provision of Belton Estate workers by the Brownlow family, but as the village continued to grow, its congregation gradually started to accept people from outside of that workforce.
