About Nettleham
In the heart of the Lincolnshire countryside, just to the northeast of the county town of Lincoln, the village of Nettleham is situated on the banks of the Nettleham Beck.
The village was once home to a sizeable property known as Bishop’s Manor. Only traces of the foundations now exist in a field, but the property was once home of Edith of Wessex, the wife of historic king Edward the Confessor. In 1301, Nettleham’s manor was where King Edward I made his son Edward the first Prince of Wales.
The historic nature of Nettleham is also manifest in the local parish church, dedicated to All Saints, as much of the building dates from the Saxon period, with some later additions.
Grace Crowfoot, a pioneer in the study of archaeological textiles, grew up in Nettleham Hall in the latter years of the 19th century. In 1942 she co-authored an article about the Tunic of Tutankhamun, the famous Egyptian pharaoh. She also carried out extensive work in the Sutton Hoo area and throughout Palestine.
