About Farnsfield
The area around Farnsfield shows has evidence at several sites of ancient Roman and earlier occupation. South of the village, along the footpath to Oxton, are the remains of a small Roman marching camp, possibly the site of a small Roman fort. There are no longer any remains in the fields nearby, but outlines of the buildings can clearly still be seen on aerial photos, including the satellite view provided by Google Maps.
Just to the west of the village is Robin Hoods Wheelgate Park, a family-focused all weather attraction, containing a water park, theme park and farm. There are thirty acres of climbing frames, animals, indoor play centres and rides galore, providing a range of entertainment for the whole family.
Just south is the site of a fatal aircraft crash in 1944, where an RAF Halifax bomber crashed on its way back to RAF Burn near York. There is a memorial erected in memory of the crew who lost their lives, and there is a scenic 6 mile walk through local farm land to access it.
