About Eynsham
The large Oxfordshire village of Eynsham started off as a small Romano-British settlement and has retained much of its medieval charm even to this day. There are a number of 16th and 17th-century buildings that were built using materials stolen from the former abbey which was demolished during the dissolution of the monasteries.
Technology company Siemens is a major employer in the area, with a factory specialising in large superconducting magnets located just outside of the village. As Eynsham is around 5 miles outside of the city of Oxford itself, there are also a number of people who commute, although this is predominantly by car as there is no rail line linking the two.
The A40 runs just to the north of Eynsham, connecting Oxford to the South East with Cheltenham to the North West, running through places such as Burford, Windrush and Northleach. The River Thames is not far to the South and is connected to the village by the Wharf Stream. The Old Canal was used for transporting coal during the Victorian era, with Eynsham Lock being a short distance from the Swinford toll bridge that still charges a nominal fee for crossing.
