About Batheaston
Just north of the City of Bath, and situated on the northern bank of the River Avon, the village of Batheaston is one of the more scenic areas of the area, and since its 18th century heyday, has been considered something of a haven for prominent individuals with larger country houses.
The Grade II listed Eagle House was extensively remodelled in the 18th century, and in the early 20th century was home to Mary Blathwayt, a prominent member of the suffragette movement, frequently hosting other key figures such as Cristabel Pankhurst, Annie Kenney and Charlotte Despard.
Many years before, Eagle House had also been the home of John Wood (the Younger), the famed architect known for his work throughout the Bath area, including the iconic Royal Crescent, considered to be one of the best examples of Georgian Neo-Classical architecture in Britain.
