Located on the banks of the River Lea, just east of the county town of Hertford, the historic settlement of Ware has been occupied since at least the Roman times, when it operated as a trading post on the famous Ermine Street, the main road between London and Lincoln.
Throughout history, the town has appeared as a significant point outside the capital several times, mentioned in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and the Peasants’ Revolt of the 14th century. Due to the abundance of water from the river and the speed of its flow, Ware grew significantly during the Industrial Revolution, with many mills being constructed in the town.
One of the most notable things from the town is the ‘Great Bed of Ware’, a vast four-poster bed kept at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Thought to be one of the most famous pieces of furniture, the Great Bed has been referenced in the works of Shakespeare, Lord Byron and Charles Dickens.
Near the town centre is Scott’s Grotto, an 18th-century series of chambers stretching over 65ft, making it the largest in the UK, decorated with shells, flint and coloured glass.
