About Castletown
One of the smaller residential areas of Stafford, Castletown is also fairly well connected, with Stafford’s railway station just a short walk away, just the other side of the mail Royal Mail sorting office on Newport Road. Castletown is nestled between the village of Doxey and the newer development of Rowley Park.
Castletown is named in reference to the proximity to Stafford’s Castle, which although ruined, still remains a prominent part of the town’s skyline. A wooden castle was built on the current site as early as the 1070s, just after the Norman invasion and enjoyed a lengthy lifespan as a fortified house for many years, eventually being ruined by Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil War.
The Stafford Castle Golf Course is a 9-hole route in beautiful green parkland that is also overlooked by the castle. It can also be found in the Castletown area, as well as the King’s Horse, a recently built Greene King pub that is popular due to its Sunday carvery.
