About Doxey
Located just to the west of Stafford, Doxey is located on former marshland around the banks of the River Sow, and segmented by Doxey Brook, the small water course that was named after the village. It is uncertain where the village’s name comes from, but it is thought to come from the Old English word meaning “Ducks Island”, in reference to Doxey’s marshy surrounds.
As well as the beautiful marshland that still makes up a good portion of the land around Doxey, there are also green spaces at Castle View Park, as well as a small play area with parkland just off of the Crescent. The parish church of St Thomas and St Andrew, located on the main Doxey Road,
One of the notable people to come from Doxey was cricketer Stanley Gobey, a left-handed amateur player who briefly played for Warwickshire County Cricket Club in the 1940s. He was brought in to fill out the team when it lacked players following the Second World War. He was not successful in either of his appearances.
