About Knutton

Located just west of Newcastle-under-Lyme and nestled between the village of Silverdale, and the suburb of Cross Heath, the village of Knutton in Staffordshire is a scenic place to live and has grown up around a patch of open heathland, named in records from the Victorian era as Knutton-Heath.

Knutton Village has been settled by people since at least the publication of the Doomsday book in 1086. Knutton, at the time, was referred to as ‘Clotone’. One tradition behind the name of the village is that Knutton was named in honour of King Canute, i.e. ‘Cnut’s town’.

Knutton Cemetery, just off of Cotswold Road, is a relatively new garden of remembrance for the area, especially as the land at St Mary’s Church in the village is no longer used for burials. It opened in 1888 but has never been the main place of burials in the Newcastle-under-Lyme area. Records for the cemetery are held at neighbouring Keele Cemetery, just off the A525.

Lyme Brook runs through the village, a tributary stream of the River Trent. The Brook merges with the river just outside of the Hanford suburb of Stoke-on-Trent, making it one of the main watercourses that snake through the Staffordshire countryside in the area.
