About Longton

Longton is one of six smaller towns amalgamated into the borough of Stoke-on-Trent in 1910. Located to the southwest of the city’s centre, Longton can be found just off of the A50 main road and was based around a central marketplace, that is still in use to this day.

The working museum of Gladstone Pottery is home to coal-fired pottery and is found just off of the main Uttoxeter Road. Based on the site of a former Georgian pottery factory, Gladstone Pottery has appeared in a number of television programmes, such as The Great Pottery Throwdown, Most Haunted, 24 Hours in the Past and BBC’s Doctor Who during the 1980s.

Longton briefly rose to infamy in the 1840s when coal miners from the town and nearby Hanley began a general strike, opposing wage cuts in mills and collieries. The strike also led to the “Pottery Riots”, a peaceful protest that got out of hand, centred around different areas of the growing city of Stoke-on-Trent.

The town is connected to the Crewe-Derby line via a station originally opened in 1848, with a bus interchange being developed much later for the people of Longton in 2003. Secondary schools include St Thomas More Catholic Academy and Stoke Studio College.

Whether you live in Longton itself or anywhere in the wider Stoke-on-Trent area, there will be a shutter to suit your home and style. Get in touch with us at Shuttercraft and book your free home appointment today.
