Named after the ruins and site of an actual castle, the Telford suburb of Apley Castle is home to the Princess Royal Hospital, just two minutes’ drive from the M54, and with its own A&E and maternity unit, is one of the main healthcare facilities in the area. Apley Castle itself was dismantled in 1955 following the Second World War, with the hospital, a school and a hospice based on its former grounds, and farm buildings having been converted into houses.
Just north of the hospital is Apley Woods, covering 56 acres of meadows, pools, trees and footpaths in a fantastic woodland space that acts as a striking contrast with the busy town of Telford. As well as containing the site of the old Georgian Manor House, Apley Woods also contains a large amount of Woodland art and sculptures for people to discover. The Energy Rising carved stone sculpture is thought to symbolise lava emerging from the earth.
Directly adjacent to the other suburbs of Dothill and Leegomery, Apley is situated just off of the A5223 Whitchurch Road, one of Telford’s main roads, leading through to junction 6 of the M54. During the 1960s and 1970s, Telford was developed as a “new town”, as part of a government push to create more housing across the country. The former castle estate seemed like a good site, along with the surrounding farm lands that were developed into the town’s other suburbs.
