About Horsehay
Home to the Telford Steam Railway, Horsehay village is located to the South West of Telford, very much nestled in the industrial history of the area, close to the Ironbridge Gorge, canals, and manmade lakes created by filling in open pit coal mines in the area. The steam railway is run by volunteers over three small stations in Telford, featuring small steam trips, a tram, model railway and popular tearoom.
One of Horsehay’s most notable residents was Edith Pargeter, better known as the writer Ellis Peters, who used the alternative name to pen the Brother Cadfael series of medieval detective novels. With her most famous creation being turned into a television series starring Derek Jacobi in the late 1990s, Pargeter never moved far from her Horsehay home, moving to nearby Madeley, where she died in 1995.
The village of Horsehay was nothing more than a farm until the mid-18th century, likely influencing the settlement’s name. It was at that point that Quaker industrialist Abraham Darby II founded a blast furnace next to the local pond, leading to local ironworks, and helping usher in the growth of the Industrial Revolution in the Telford area.
