Priorslee as a name originated from the Anglo-Saxon word “lee” meaning a clearing in the wood, and the area once being under the ownership of nearby Wombridge Priory. The priory was dissolved in 1536, although its buildings remained visible until the 19th century, when they were buried beneath the churchyard.
A chapel was built in the mid-12th century for the priors in the village, although this was demolished in the Victorian era. The font from the original chapel now stands by the front door of St Peter’s Church, which is technically within the Telford suburb of St George’s.
A lake known as the Flash at Priorslee, also known as Hangman’s Pool, is a local haven for a variety of wildlife and a fantastic location for bird watching. Despite its ominous name, Hangman’s Pool is popular with families, dog walkers and anglers, the pool offers picnic benches and various resting points to spend some time observing the sights and sounds of the wildlife around the lake.
The Telford campus of the University of Wolverhampton is situated in Priorslee, with the 18th century Grade II listed Priorslee Hall situated at its centre. The Hall is now occupied by the University’s International Academy.
