About Wednesfield
Now forming one of the more significant parts of Wolverhampton, Wednesfield was once a separate town in its own right until the latter half of the 20th century, when the expansion of its neighbour meant the merging of the two settlements.
With a name coming from Old English (meaning the Field of Woden), Wednesfield briefly featured at a critical point in history. The Battle of Tettenhall was a decisive defeat of invading Vikings in 910 – due to the area in which it was fought; it is also referred to in texts as the Battle of Wednesfield.
Kevin Rowland, the singer for Dexys Midnight Runners, is one of the most famous people to originate from Wednesfield, being born to Irish parents who settled in the Wolverhampton area. Although the Rowland family moved to London when the singer was 11, he often speaks fondly of his Midlands upbringing.
Wednesfield Football Club was founded in 1961 and has been based at the Cottage Ground in Amos Lane since 1971.
