About Wombourne

Wombourne is a settlement that is claimed by some to be the largest village in England. Located in the county of Staffordshire, the village is situated on the banks of the River Stour and gives its name to the Wom Brook, a smaller water source that feeds into the nearby river.

Situated just west of A449 Stourbridge Road, Wombourne has a distinctive centre and a long history. As mentioned in the Domesday Book, before the Norman Conquest, the village was owned by a nobleman called Thorsten. However, most of the lands were then transferred into the ownership of a Picard baron named William.

The spelling “Wombourne” is now preferred for official use. However, there still a strong feeling with some residents feel that the added “e” is unnecessary, preferring the spelling “Wombourn” that exists on a 1775 William Yates Map and in Ordnance Survey maps up to as late as 1945. Road signs were unfortunate victims of graffiti, amending the village’s name unofficially until at least the 1990s.

The Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal runs north-south through the western side of the village, with the scenic setting of Bratch Locks being found to the northwest of Wombourne. The disused route of the South Staffordshire Railway line is another popular local spot that is perfect for walks and nature spotting.

The annual carnival has become a regular part of the Wombourne calendar, although it faced closure several years ago due to insurance issues. Held on the first Sunday of July, the carnival has a wide variety of stalls made up of independent traders, local businesses, community groups and local charities, as well as lots of family entertainment.
