About Pudsey
Located roughly halfway between the city centres of Bradford and Leeds, the Victorian market town of Pudsey has been incorporated into the City of Leeds Metropolitan Borough since 1974, yet still retains much of its individuality. Nestled in the centre of a natural valley, Pudsey has been used as a settlement since at least Roman times, with a cache of 100 silver coins being found on Pudsey Common in the late 18th century.
The abandoned medieval village of Owlcotes was situated close to the site of the modern-day ring road, with only a very few remnants of its existence left to explore. However, the village has given its name to the Owlcotes Shopping Centre, home to the local B&M, Marks & Spencer and Asda.
Being located in the heartland of the Industrial Revolution, Pudsey was once known as one of the most polluted areas of the UK, being affected by the smog coming from both Bradford and Leeds.
