Downton can be traced back as far as the Neolithic period and has had an interesting history considering it is such a small village. A 4th century Roman Villa, motte-and-bailey castle, Trafalgar Park manor house, tannery and motorsport engineering works have all been situated at Downton throughout the years, and the village was featured in a sketch by renowned artist John Constable in 1820.
One of the most characteristic elements of Downton is The Moot, an ornamental 18th-century garden based around the earthworks of a castle, which was thought to have been made of wood. A number of churches are also prominent buildings in the village, including St Laurence’s, with parts of the building dating back as far as the 13th century, and the local Baptist Church which has existed since 1791.
Being situated on the River Avon, water has always been easily accessible for local business, being used in the large tannery in the centre of the village, as well as breweries, mills and more recently Trafalgar Fisheries.
