About Hedge End
Hedge End has been growing steadily since the late 1970s, thanks to the easy access around the South via the M27. The town is thought to get its name from a farm at the end of a hedge on the road from Botley to Southampton. During the Victorian era, Hedge End became known as the ‘Strawberry Village’ due to a substantial market garden and strawberry growing areas.
During the Second World War, some of Southampton’s citizens rented accommodation in Hedge End, or otherwise sought shelter to avoid the extensive bombing that happened to the nearby city due to its docks. During the build-up to D-Day, Hedge End was on the edge of a huge gathering site set up by the military, known as Area C.
Manor Farm is a popular family country park and visitor attraction just outside of Hedge End. A traditional working farm with costumed, animal interaction and rural walks.
