About Tisbury

Nestled in the Nadder Valley, a part of the West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Tisbury is a large village that is steeped in over 2,000 years of history. The 12th century parish church of St John’s can be found in the centre of Tisbury, with an ancient yew tree in the churchyard still going strong after nearly 4,000 years.

At the eastern edge of the village is the gallery, arts centre and restaurant known as Messums Wiltshire. Set in a Grade I listed thatched Tithe Barn at Place Farm, the building is arguably the largest tithe barn in England still open to the public and in regular use.

Fans of the 1991 blockbuster film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves will recognise the scenes set at the fictional Locksley Castle, the residence of Robin’s father. The ruins and stylised grotto were actually shot at Old Wardour Castle, less than 3 miles from Tisbury and nestled in the Wiltshire countryside.

As with much of Wiltshire, there is significant evidence of ancient settlements in the area. Found in 2011, a discovery known as the Tisbury Hoard comprised 114 bronze items dated from roughly the 9th to 8th century BC. To the southeast of the village also lies a large hillfort that was referred to as Willburge in a 10th century charter, though the area is now referred to as Castle Ditches.

Whether you live in the Tisbury area or in surrounding parts of the South and Wiltshire such as Stapleford, Downton, Farley and Winchester, there will be a shutter to suit your home and style. Get in touch with us at Shuttercraft and book your free home appointment today.
