About the Chilterns

Covering an area of around 660 square miles north west of London, the Chiltern Hills (more affectionately known as the Chilterns) are a chalk escarpment that overlooks the Vale of Aylesbury, and includes a number of villages and towns in the region. Due to the abundance of naturally occurring chalk, the area has been extensively used in its mass production, for use in the manufacture of cement.

The largely rural landscape of the Chilterns was scattered with a sequence of remote villages, hamlets, farms and market towns, until the development of canals during the 18th century. This period of industrialisation and mobilisation of people led to the growth of places such as High Wycombe, Tring and Luton.

The Chilterns were officially recognised in 1965 as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), due to the finery of landscapes and scientifically important flora and fauna. As a result, the Chilterns enjoy special protection against major developments in the rural area. In the year 2000, the government confirmed that AONBs were equivalent to the importance of National Parks.

Interesting the Chilterns are also used as a way for MPs to resign their position in the House of Commons. Members of Parliament are legally not allowed to resign before an election, so instead are appointed as Crown Steward and Bailiff of the three Chiltern Hundreds, an ancient administrative position that requires MPs to vacate their seats.

With Shuttercraft, you can discover some of the best window shutters the Chilterns have to offer. We offer surveys and quotations free of charge, with no obligation to buy. Contact your local Shuttercraft and book your free home appointment today.
