Located on the banks of the River Thame, the town also known as Thame is conveniently situated, roughly halfway between Oxford and Aylesbury, connected via the A418 to the M40 motorway between London and Birmingham.
Thame initially grew during the Anglo-Saxon period but has since continued to grow, developing an individual character whilst preserving its history. There are medieval buildings still standing alongside Georgian and Victorian architecture, with a visually striking market place in the boat-shaped high street still shows Thame’s trading origins.
There was an Abbey founded in Thame in 1138 to be used by monks of the Cistercian Order. In the 16th century the abbey was pulled apart and the church demolished during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. A large country house known as Thame Park was built on the site, incorporating parts of the abbey such as the early-16th century abbot’s house. Tied to the abbey but not on the same site, the Prebendary House near St. Mary’s Church became the home of Bee Gee Robin Gibb until his death in 2012.
Jonathan More, half of the electronic music Coldcut and founder of the Ninja Tune record label, was born in Thame, as was Ronald Lee, the British Army officer and cricketer who once played for the Oxfordshire and Cambridge University teams in the late Victorian era.
