About Kings Langley
Based on the banks of the River Gade and just outside of the M25 London Orbital, the village of Kings Langley has existed as a settlement since the Roman Times. Remains of a villa were unearthed as part of the building works in 1981. With lengthy history, the village now forms part of the London commuter belt.
Kings Langley Palace was a 13th-century Royal Palace which became a royal possession in 1276 when Queen Eleanor of Castile, wife of King Edward I, acquired the estate and supervised the development of a tremendous royal household. However, by the 17th century, the estate had fallen into disrepair, and the manor building was gradually pulled apart. Nowadays, the site is nothing more than farmland.
The village was, for most of the 20th century, the site of Ovaltine chocolate drink production, being brought to the UK in 1909. The art deco factory facade designed in the 1920s is now all that remains and still stands alongside the railway line among a new housing development. The Ovaltine factory has been converted into a series of flats and duplexes.
