About Armthorpe
Located out to the east of Doncaster and bordered by the M18 motorway, the large village of Armthorpe still comes under the civil authority of the neighbouring town. Mainly a rural settlement throughout history, the land around Armthorpe was once owned by the Cistercian monks of nearby Roche Abbey.
As with many places around Doncaster and Rotherham, Armthorpe was home to its own colliery during the coal production boom of the 20th century. Markham Main was initially sunk in 1916 and named in honour of Sir Arthur Markham, the industrialist and politician who helped set up the mine and who died the same year at the age of 49.
Kevin Keegan, one of the most recognised names in English football, was born and grew up in Armthorpe as the son of a coal miner. The village was also the childhood home of a more controversial footballer, Peter Swan, the Sheffield Wednesday centre-half who was embroiled in a betting scandal that meant he missed out on the 1966 World Cup due to a ban.
